Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can I apply?
A: By submitting the required documents to the
HECER office.
Q:
Which documents do I need to submit when applying for the HECER PhD Programme?
A: You should submit the provided application form and your CV. You
will also need two letters
of recommendation, which the referees should send directly to the
HECER office. The application form will be
available on the overview page
of the PhD programme when the application time begins.
Q: When should I apply?
A: The application period in 2011 is from March 15, 8:00 am to April 15,
4:00 pm.
We will not take into consideration applications that arrive before or after the application
period.
Q: I have submitted an application to the HECER PhD
Programme. Do I still need to send applications to other departments?
A: Yes. You need to send two separate applications - one to HECER
and one to the member department
of your choice. The HECER
application is for the HECER PhD Programme (the funding programme) and the member
department application is for the actual postgraduate position.
Q: Should I apply for one of the HECER's member departments before receiving the result of
acceptance to the HECER PhD
programme?
A: The HECER PhD application period is usually approximately at the same
time as the
application times for the member departments. In any case, you will not receive the
results for the HECER PhD position before the application
deadlines for the member departments are closed. HECER will
check that the chosen students have been granted a doctoral student status
at any of the member departments.
Q: Does it suffice to receive the
Master's degree before entering the programme (and not
before applying)?
A: Yes. The Master's degree should be in economics or in some other
relevant field related to economics. But notice that you should also check
the member departments' web sites, as they may have their own specific qualifications for
the applicants.
Q: My institution does not grade thesis and/or does
not provide GPA. What should I report in the application form?
A: Provide the information of your ranking in your programme or indicate
that the question is "not applicable".
Q: What is
the difference between HECER
and the
member departments?
A: HECER is a joint venture of the Economics departments of Aalto University, Hanken School of
Economics and University of Helsinki. HECER is not an
independent university. On the contrary, it is a
research institute and a part of all three
universities. This is why HECER cannot independently grant a doctoral student
status to the candidates.
Q: How long does it take to get the results?
A: It takes about a month for the results to be published. The candidates
will be informed of the results personally by e-mail.
Q: Who can I have as a referee?
A: The referee can be a professor from your home university, for example
your thesis supervisor.
