Economics offers unique tools to analyze and understand important societal and business problems, and to conduct research on them. A PhD education in economics is a stepping stone into a research career and exciting and demanding expert positions in the private and public sector as well as in international institutions. The HECER PhD Programme offers highly motivated and talented individuals the possibility to pursue their goal of acquiring a solid training in economics at the highest level. The four year HECER PhD Programme is structured according to best practice in economics. The training consists of a first year of core courses (micro- and macroeconomics, econometrics). The course work provides the foundation for the students’ own research. The second and third years consist of original research and courses in fields of interest in economics (econometrics, industrial organization, international economics, labour economics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomics and public economics). The fourth year consists of original research. The HECER PhD Programme builds on the Finnish Doctoral Programme in Economics (FDPE). For admitted students, the HECER PhD Programme offers funding for four years. HECER, a joint venture between the economics departments of Aalto University, Hanken School of Economics and University of Helsinki, offers an exciting environment of high international quality. The HECER PhD Programme emphasizes collegiality, support, and encouragement in addition to students’ own effort. HECER offers a wide supply of seminars and conferences and faculty that are at the forefront of their fields of interest. HECER has recently placed students well in the international academic job market with positions at LSE, Mannheim, and Nottingham. Those who are accepted
