Financial Aid

Full-time doctoral students are normally supported by an assistantship in one of the participating institutions or by a grant from one of the Finnish foundations. The assistants are appointed by the individual universities on a competitive basis. Research assistantships and grants are for full-time study and research. A university assistantship entails some teaching and administrative duties.

In addition, FDPE has 15 graduate student fellowships available for promising and successful doctoral students. A student can have the GS fellowship for a maximum of 4 years. This requires successful progress in his/her research work. These positions are filled annually during the latter part of the spring term.

Since the universities in Finland charge no tuition fees, the courses and seminars offered by FDPE are free for students.

About 80 of the 150 students in FDPE are full-time students. The part-time students mostly work in various public and private research institutes.
