• Course description: The course is given by three lecturers and comprises three parts. Mikko Mustonen focuses on network effects, intermediation, two-sided markets and topics in software markets. Tuomas Takalo focuses on innovation and intellectual property. The topics covered are i) patent races and welfare effects of patents; ii) intellectual property with cumulative innovation; iii) competition policy of innovative industries and iv) financing of innovative start-ups. Klaus Kultti focuses on pricing and industry structure in markets with frictions. The prime example is search markets where consumers have to exert effort to learn about prices and available products. The course is mainly theoretical.

• The course evaluation will be based on the home assignments and an exam.
• In the exam, there will be one question from each part.

Time: October 22, 2010 at 10 am - 2 pm

• Places:
  • At the participants' own departments
  • but in Helsinki only in Economicum, 4th floor, room B416 where all students living in or near Helsinki can take the exam.
• Please register for the exam by sending an e-mail to fdpe-hecer[at]helsinki.fi and let us know where you want to take the exam.
• Deadline for registration: October 18, 2010
• The results are in.
